Where In the World Is Mr. Hunter? - East Ninth Street Edition (The Answer)

Which museum was Mr. Hunter visiting when he stood before this lovely Abstract Expressionist painting?  Well, he wasn't on East Ninth Street, but the painting he was admiring is called East Ninth Street.  The piece is by Joan Mitchell, and you can see the entire work in all its glory if you go to the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art (LACMA).

Ten years ago, Mr. Hunter and family went to LACMA for the first time--to see a show about John Singer Sargent in Italy, actually--and it was in the permanent collections of LACMA that Mr. Hunter's caretaker discovered the seemingly endless pleasure of taking photographs of paintings and details of paintings.  There's a sort of conversation that takes place for me, a particular kind of deeper engagement as I zoom in on aspects of artworks that have spoken to me.

I have synesthesia, and one type of synesthesia that I experience makes it so that I hear what I see; the things I'm looking at create an experience of sound in some other dimension.  As I focus on different points in a painting, I've noticed that particularly pleasing compositions in my viewfinder will change the sounds of that painting for me, like an alignment or a kind of harmony.

In doing some research on Joan Mitchell and her painting, I've just learned that Mitchell also had synesthesia!  This WWD article by Lorna Koski recounts that "Mitchell was notably bright and shrewd and had the unusual quality of being a synesthete, someone for whom sounds, letters, numbers and personalities had colors, flavors and shapes."  I shall have to investigate further.  And this illustrates another of the pleasures of taking photographs of works of art: revisiting those photographs can lead you down new paths so that your experience of the paintings and sculptures broadens to include new stories.

I quite like this detail from East Ninth Street.

Stay tuned to see more photos from Mr. Hunter's LACMA explorations.

Where in the World Is Mr. Hunter? The answer (Rope Bridge edition)

Where was Mr. Hunter when he encountered this rope bridge?

He was exploring the grounds while he vacationed at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, home to water slides, a lively lazy river, expensive restaurants, heat, humidity... and a little something else that shall be revealed later on Mr. Hunter's blog.

Those are the famed Royal Towers in the background,
and a lagoon filled with rays in the foreground.

More to come on Mr. Hunter's visit to the Bahamas!

Where in the world is Mr. Hunter? The answer (Haunted edition)

Where was Mr. Hunter when he nestled in the crook of this lantern's arm?
He was visiting a friend at Southern Vermont College
 in Bennington, Vermont.

This particular architectural detail can be found and admired at Everett Mansion, a lovely old building that houses many of the college's classrooms, as well as a cafe and the library.

Hmm, a little bit of searching online reveals that the Everett Mansion and Southern Vermont College are rumored to be haunted by at least three ghosts, according to this blog post: the ghosts of Edward and Grace Everett, and a notable figure called "the Black-Hooded Monk."  Mr. Hunter didn't notice any of these spirits while he walked the college grounds.  Or, if he did, he hasn't told me about it yet!

But I guess if ghosts are looking for a place to haunt, then a mansion where lanterns are held aloft by arms that stick out of stone walls is a perfect location.

Where in the world is Mr. Hunter? The answer (Lighthouse edition)

Where was Mr. Hunter when he decided to work as a lighthouse keeper?

Mr. H was in Maine,
enjoying the view at the Cape Neddick Lighthouse (aka "Nubble").
The basket Mr. Hunter has climbed into is--you guessed it!--the way that Nubble lighthouse keepers would cross over to the island.

Where in the world is Mr. Hunter? The Kripalu Center

Where was Mr. Hunter when he posed with this stone sculpture?
At the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in the Berkshires.

At one entrance to the Kripalu Center's property, Mr. Hunter found this pleasing ruin of an old stone house.  (Can you see Mr. Hunter on the stoop?)

Where in the world is Mr. Hunter? - the answer

Where was Mr. Hunter when he met this beer-bellied statue?
At a beer garden, of course!

On vacation back in 2007, Mr. Hunter and Co. hung out at the Seehaus Beer Garden, located on the shores of Kleinhesseloher See (Lake) in Munich's Englischer Garten.

Prost!

Beer garden necessity: big pretzel.

Lakeside dining means that swans and other waterfowl swim over
and ask you for some food.

Ducklings!

We had taken a walk beforehand.
Here's Seehaus seen from across the lake.
My brother took this photo of the Seehaus's naked guardian.

(A number of these photos were taken by my brother, actually.
A fine photographer!)

Where in the world is Mr. Hunter? The answer

Which island and state park was Mr. Hunter visiting when he encountered biting gnats?

It's located in the Great Salt Lake, just north of Salt Lake City, Utah.

We spotted a few of the island's namesake pronghorn antelope.
But what we saw a lot more of were the American bison.

Neither Mr. Hunter nor any of his bite-able human companions had any desire to even try to photograph those nasty gnats.  Just be warned that if you ever head over to Antelope Island State Park, you should avoid wearing anything that might have even the tiniest bit of fragrance; hair product in particular sent the gnats into a frenzy, as one frustrated member of Mr. Hunter's party was sad to discover.
Mr. Hunter was glad then that he has no need for hair product.

Where in the world is Mr. Hunter? The answer: hula dancing edition

Where was Mr. Hunter when he felt the urge to sway his hips*?

Where was Mr. Hunter when he posed in the window of a castle?

The Chateau is the setting for Lord Byron's poem, "The Prisoner of Chillon."
